Who We Are

Welcome to Made to Be Messy, where creativity meets connection, and messy play becomes magical! Founded in 2020 by Laura, a passionate advocate for hands-on, open-ended play, Made to Be Messy was born out of a love for helping children thrive through sensory and creative exploration. With over a decade of experience working in childcare centres and playgroups, two children of her own, and a Bachelor in Early Childhood Education in progress, Laura saw firsthand how messy play inspires curious thinking and creativity. Frustrated by the lack of accessible, mess-friendly activities that combined fun and learning, she set out to create something that truly ticked all the boxes. Starting with pop-up events in local parks and hired halls, Laura’s vision grew—along with her equipment and ideas! After years of searching for the perfect space, Made to Be Messy opened its dedicated studio in Heathridge in July 2023. This vibrant, modern space features both indoor and outdoor areas designed to provide children with a safe, enriching environment to explore, create, and grow.

Our Mission

At Made to Be Messy, we believe that messy play isn’t just fun—it’s essential. Our mission is simple: to ignite curiosity, fuel imagination, and nurture a lifelong love of learning. Through sensory play, arts and crafts, STEAM activities, music, and movement, we create hands-on experiences that inspire children to explore their world and themselves.

But we’re not just here for the kids. We understand the pressures parents and caregivers face, and we’re committed to making life easier for you. From planning the activities to cleaning up afterward, we take care of the mess so you can say yes to paint, glitter, and creativity without the stress. With every splash of colour, every squish of clay, and every shared giggle, children are on a journey of self-discovery and growth—and you get to be part of the magic.

Why Mess Matters

Messy play is more than just splashes of paint and glitter—it’s a transformative experience that fosters creativity, connection, and growth. At Made to Be Messy, we believe in the magic of messy play because it’s a powerful tool for childhood development and a gateway to lifelong learning. It’s not just about making a mess; it’s about igniting curiosity, fueling imagination, and building essential skills for life.

  • Boosts Creativity and Imagination

Messy play offers children the freedom to explore their imagination without limits. There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to create, which means kids can experiment fearlessly. This kind of open-ended play nurtures innovation and encourages children to think outside the box.

    Example:
When a child mixes paint to discover new colours or sculpts a figure from clay, they’re engaging in creative problem-solving and self-expression.

    Why It Matters:
Creativity is a skill that extends beyond childhood, fostering critical thinking and adaptability throughout life.

  • Supports Sensory Development

Messy play engages multiple senses—touch, sight, sound, and even smell—helping children build vital neural connections. These sensory experiences are the foundation of cognitive growth and physical development.

    Example:
Squishing clay, pouring water, or exploring the texture of kinetic sand allows children to understand their environment through tactile exploration.

    Why it Matters:
Research shows that sensory play strengthens pathways in the brain, enhancing memory, focus, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Enhances Social and Emotional Skills

Messy play provides a safe space for children to express emotions, build relationships, and develop empathy. Whether collaborating on a group activity or sharing materials, kids learn valuable social skills.

    What They Learn:

    • Sharing and taking turns.
    • Understanding others’ perspectives.
    • Resolving conflicts in creative ways.

    Why it Matters:
Expressing emotions through creative play can help children process feelings, reduce stress, and build self-confidence.

  • Fosters Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking

Experimentation is at the heart of messy play. Children learn cause and effect by mixing materials, testing ideas, and observing outcomes. These activities teach them how to approach challenges and find solutions.

    Examples:

    • Building a structure from playdough and blocks teaches balance and engineering principles.
    • Mixing different textures helps children understand how materials interact.

    Why it Matters:
These problem-solving skills build a strong foundation for future learning in subjects like science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

  • Builds Fine and Gross Motor Skills

Messy play involves physical activities that refine motor skills. From pouring and moulding to cutting and drawing, these actions help children strengthen coordination and dexterity.

    Fine Motor Skills:
Activities like threading beads or squeezing a glue bottle improve hand strength and precision.

    Gross Motor Skills:
Actions like mixing large batches of paint or stretching to reach a high canvas promote body awareness and movement control.

  • Encourages Inclusivity and Accessibility

Messy play is universally welcoming. Because it’s open-ended and flexible, children of all abilities and developmental stages can participate and benefit. It’s a space where everyone can feel included and capable.

    No Pressure:
With no right or wrong way to play, children are free to explore at their own pace and in their unique style.

    All-Abilities Friendly:
Activities can be adapted to suit varying needs, ensuring every child can experience the joy of messy play.
